The snowstorm of 1985 in northern Italy January 13th-17th, 1985 Rate Topic: -----

After some cold days with lows till -28.8°C/-19.4°F in central Po valley (between Bologna and Parma), on january 13th-17th, 1985 a mediterranean low pressure brought 4 days of snowfalls on northern Italy with amount till over 1 meter of snow even in lowland.

Some lows between Venice and Bologna on january 11th (all the places are located between 0 and 40 mt a.s.l.)

Conselice -26.2°C/-15.1°F
Alfonsine -25.9°C/-14.6°F
Lugo -25.7°C/-14.2°F
Bagnacavallo -25.4°C/-13.7°F
Russi -24.3°C/-11.7°F
Faenza -18.7°C/-1.7°F
Ravenna -17.4°C/-0.7°F
Forlì -20.0°C/-4.0°F
Cesena -19.4°C/-2.9°F
Rimini -17.2°C/-0.6°F

Some amounts of this snowfall (all the places are below 300mt/983ft)

Trento -> 144cm / 56.7 inches
Varese -> 126 cm / 49.6 inches
Milan -> between 80 and 110 cm / between 31 and 43 inches
Udine -> 50 cm / 20 inches
Bologna -> 70 cm / 27.5 inches

HAHAHAHAHA!!! That's like saying your grandparents are from Mars. In case you didn't know Northern Italians don't like Southern Italians very much. And for good reason. The tax structure in Italy BLOWS!

BTW, I lived in Northern Italy for 2 yrs (Aviano) and those are some shocking snowfall amounts/cold for the Po Valley Matteo! I would never think Udine would get 20 inches of snow!!

January of 1985 featured record-setting cold here in the eastern U.S. as well. President Reagan's inauguration on January 20th, for his 2nd term, had to be moved inside the Capital Rotunda because it was too cold to have it outside. First time in history that was ever done.

oh yes, very cold in Jan 85!!! RIC dropped to -6°F. Also, one of the handful of times RIC has had 2 or more consecutive nights below 0°F

Pity the last 10-15 winters have been relatively mild and just with short wintry episodes, so you has probably been here in one of those mild winter :thumbsupsmileyanim:

The winters in Po valley are pretty cold and snowy, above all respect to the stereotyped italian climate and for the position of Po valley.

Turin's or Bologna's winters aren't so different from the Ohio or Philadelphia ones.

About your first part of the message: you know, it's a long story ... and not just a tax thing, it's much more and hard to explain to foreigners (mentality, culture etc).
BTW northern italians don't hate southern italians (and viceversa), there is just a widespread "low sympathy" since the sunrise of Italy, but nothing more.
Here it's not the right place to discuss it ;)

Storms like that in Po valley happen every 3-5 winters.

Anyway snowfalls with 15-25 cm (6-10 inches) in 24 hours, happen every year.

Take this one, 44cm/17 inches of snow in 11 hours at Bologna on february 28th, 2004
