Happens all of the time here in AZ-they've even been known to take roofs off homes here and one in the late 1980's destroyed the Aerostat on Fort Huachuca to the tune of 3 million dollars damage.

I saw a "hay devil" at a friend's farm (near Goldsboro, Ed.). I was about 10 years old. We ran into it and played in it, the winds weren' t that bad.

I came on here just to post this!

My first "storm chase" as a child was when I ran after a whirlwind that formed in my yard and then took off across a field. It grew to be pretty strong, and my ears popped when I got at the edge of the vortex.

Large dust devils can be as strong as a F1 tornado so they can certainly cause damage. In fact, last year there was a fatality caused by a DD in ME when a man was killed by debris in a devil. The devil that took out the Aerostat had winds in excess of 80mph while Doppler Radar has measured speeds as high as 94mph in a large devil in NM. I lost panels off my Patio Cover in a devil with a measured windspeed of 79 mph. Somewhere around here I have a photo of a neighbor's Garden Shed that was destroyed by a DD but it will take some time to find it.
