SPC busted on this outbreak. This probably would have warranted a high risk in at least SW MO, yet they never went above a slight risk. A little puzzling.

What a fooking crazy day. Another outbreak I wasn't able to track online, but this time it wasn't even cause I was chasing it :(. I drove back to OK from my parents' place in AL today - based on all the models the past several days, I figured the main activity would be over AR after dark and I'd be past it in OK heading west by the time it happened. Was a little concerned when I saw the NAM this morning holding the dryline back, but never expected this. I ended up plowing through and between the several tornadic supercells in ECNTRL OK earlier this evening on I-40 with the help of a friend watching radar (wasn't a good idea in retrospect, but by the time I realized the OK cells were also going tornadic I was already going through one and couldn't do much). Didn't see anything of note besides interesting lightning-illuminated structure, but it was a bit scary, especially knowing what had already transpired shortly beforehand in SW MO. Have a friend in Joplin who took his mom out for a casual, on-the-whim chase of the first Springfield supercell (well, it didn't seem too serious when he initially left home anyway)... he emerged from the core to see the Monett tornado less than 2 miles away and approaching rapidly, and apparently had a very close call. Well, I'm with everyone else, I must be dreaming this up for Jan 7. PDS box with 95% probabilities? Damn, I can only hope we see that in the Plains even once this Spring. Globar warming? ;)

I couldn't bear the thought of not having a few pics from today, even if they weren't anything too notable... so here's a wide view looking W from near Webbers Falls, OK, at 6:54 PM, at a cell that was in the process of becoming supercellular at the time.

I find it hard to comprehend what is happening in Southwest MO. Imagine...how many times do you have to take shelter? Some of these counties have been under or near tornado warnings for more than six hours now? It must be an incredible event for the local television meteorologists to try and cover.

New tornado warnings being issued as of 1 a.m. tonight. Crazy.

I'm somewhat worried about this next round of storms because most people have went to bed thinking the worst is over. Hopefully, people are still paying attention and will take shelter.

Nocturnal jetting at the low levels -- very common for the low level jet to strengthen during the early morning hours --- and a good call on your part, Janet ... stay safe.
