some very nasty storms in that area. This area has already had its share of severe wx over the past week. A very scary situation when you see this stuff occur at night.

Are they any reports from that area whether or not one is on the ground or not? Not much vertical shear in the area, LCL's aren't all that low but the airmass is still reallu unstable with SBcapes of 2000 J/KG and LI's of -7. Supercell composite is 4

Interesting situation developing at this hour across Indiana...latest SPC Mesoanalysis graphics showing ~2000joules of MLCAPE ahead of the cluster of severe thunderstorms that were mentioned, along with 25-35kts of 0-6km vertical shear, supportive of a largely isolated (but interesting) tornado threat. Wind fields may be supportive of a few isolated damaging wind gusts as well.

I turned my weather radio off because I needed a good night of sleep that I haven't had half of the nights of the past two weeks because of 2:00-3:15 AM "wakeup calls."

Last time I do that.

thats why you never go to bed no matter how much sleep you need if there is a svr. threat. :devilsmiley:

I was out until 1am watching one of the best light shows in a long time. Constant cloud to ground, much within a mile of my car. No wind to speak of, but then i didn't go and get infront of the strongest part of the storm either, preferring to watch from a little distance to see the amazing lightning.

Better rest of now tony, its gonna be another long night it would seem.

sorry those storms came through chicago earlier and were too perfect to pass out too, glad you got in that action too. This has been an awesome month for storm lovers around here. MOD risk today so look out.

I changed the title and converted this into a severe wx thread for today since last night's activity carried over into the 23rd. Hopefully that's ok.

Moderate risk as Aleking said

I drove up to Flint to Mt. Morris toward Columbiaville last night to chase those storms.

The lightning was just incredible. I had 25+ CG strikes within a mile of my car ... lost count :)

Definitely the best storm I have seen the past couple years!!!

I hope we can have a repeat tonight!! I love REAL storms!!!

EDIT: I have to be up at 5:30AM and I was out chasing until 12:30AM too!! Screw sleep ... it is overrated compaired to an awesome t-storm!!!

been bright and sunny here around o'hare all morning, convection in iowa seems to be getting it's act together and is moving into a very unstable area, derecho event is looking increasingly likely. Here we go again.

Brief T'storm this morning in NE Ohio. Most of the heavy stuff stayed north over the lake. Should be a great night tonight. Full sun right now and HUMID. Dewpoint at 71. Looks like a good chance for a severe MCS all throughout the lower lakes.

SPC shifted the MOD risk slightly south putting chicago in the cross hairs.
