At maximum it was about -20 kt/+60 kt, or 80 kt of shear.

Hey Turtle,

Mind if I use one or some of these in our blog tonight? If so, PM me with your info so I can give you proper credit. Want to analyze this, especially if they confirm it. Thanks!

Matt

If it came in the afternoon, the seabreeze would've killed it :arrowhead:

A possible tornado in the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn area. Upton is out investigating this afternoon. You could try reading the thread all about it.

Yeah, I didn't notice the thread and was wondering which one it was. I don't see any obviously referring to a NYC tornado.

Thanks, Windsurfer_NYC.

In case this hasn't been posted anywhere else, here's the NYT's report of the storm. The damage sounds pretty extensive for a tornado in this region!

Wow, that's awesome. To my untrained eye it looks like it really "tightened" up as it got closer to the bay there. Could there be any reason for that, i.e. the water modifying the boundary layer and creating some sort of artificial boundary to "spin" this thing up?

Welcome to NYC/Long Island tornado climatology. Late summer early morning warm frontal passages in a highly sheared/tropical environment will do it every time.

After we archive the event, I'll try to remember to post some images from the Newark Airport TDWR showing gate-to-gate shear almost at ground level, and a nasty looking hook as it passed very near the JFK TDWR near Floyd Bennett Field.

You sure know how to pick which mornings to work, don't ya Bill? :arrowhead:
