To: Tsunami warning system participants in the U.S. West Coast States, Alaska, and British Columbia
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (Experimental Web Product)
Subject: Tsunami Advisory #1 issued 04/1/2007 at 1:56PM PDT

This Tsunami Advisory is for residents along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coast. NO tsunami watch or warning is in effect for these areas.

A Tsunami Advisory is issued by the WCATWC whenever the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii has issued a warning for other regions in the Pacific Basin, and NO tsunami watch or warning is in effect for the states and provinces listed above. It is unlikely that these regions will upgraded to a tsunami warning or watch. Please refer to the PTWC message for further information about the warning.

Based on the earthquake location, magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. Some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea level changes. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

At 1:40 PM Pacific Daylight Time on April 1, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.8 occurred near the Solomon Islands.

I actually started out believing this was an April Fool's joke

But yeah, there was actually a 7.6 quake near the Soloman Islands.

Oh, wow. That's funny. I was just thinking that if I was in the government, I'd issue fake alerts on April Fools Day, such as tsunami warnings. And, lo and behold, a tsunami warning has actually been issued.

Not a joke...

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recent.../us2007aqbk.php

But this is a relative low population area and the warning is only for the immediate island areas. The rest of the Pacific including the US and even Australia have no watch or warning out, just an advisory to alert of the earthquake and minor rises, but no watch/warnings are expected.

Also earthquake is down to 7.6 according to USGS. Of course more tweaks to magnitude could occur up or down.

Tsunami tide waves could occur on the West Coast. Meaning that a tsunami surge can damage docks and boats, swell creeks and what not. Crescent City, CA had it last year from the Kuril Islands 8.3. $700,000 in damage to Crescent City.

I know, I'm talking about tsunami tidal surge. Just sea level changes, that is what a tsunami advisory means. If it was a warning, there would be evacuations of course.

NOT a devastating Pacifc wide tsunami, but a tsunami surge, meaning when tide comes in, it is raised by the tiny surge, sometimes a foot.

Yes, I see that now. There needs to be some serious editing to the title done. This was just an expansion of watches/warnings...

I'm sorry, WCTC has a 7.6 and 8.1 posted, but I think they just upgraded the quake to 8.1 Sorry for the mis-information here, I get everything as it comes in.
